From the apex of the Accademia bridge, the Grand Canal opens to the south — palazzi rising on both banks, gondolas working the water, and the dome of Santa Maria della Salute closing the view about half a mile downstream. It is one of the most photographed prospects in Europe, and one of the most reliably beautiful.
Photographed in late September 2016 in black and white. The compositional logic of Venice was set down by Canaletto and his contemporaries in the eighteenth century; a photographer here is, in a sense, working in a tradition rather than against one.
