The same monument in monochrome, which is how Stonehenge has been most often rendered for two centuries of photography and engraving. The stones lose nothing when color is removed — if anything, they gain. The shapes were carved for shadow and shape, not for color, and the wind-grey of the sarsens against the Wiltshire sky is a composition that essentially renders itself.
Made in May 2023 during my first visit to England. The black-and-white version is, in a sense, closer to how the monument was meant to be seen — without the modern overlay of color photography.
