Tall bleached palm trunks — some topped with a last surviving crown of fronds, others bare poles entirely — rise among the living palms and oaks at the edge of the forest, green grass filling in around their bases. Palms hold on differently than oaks do here; long after the roots have died, the trunks can stand upright for years, especially the ones set back from the direct surf. Photographed just inland from the open beach, where the forest is still visibly losing ground to erosion but hasn't yet been reduced to open sand.
