On Caddo Lake — out among the cypress, where the open water gives way to a maze of channels winding between trees draped in Spanish moss. Caddo is a working bald-cypress swamp as much as a lake, and moving through it feels like entering an older landscape: still water, knees of cypress breaking the surface, light filtering down through the canopy.
Photographed on Caddo Lake in the summer of 1998. There are few places in the South that feel as removed from the present as the back channels of Caddo on a still summer day.
