Campo Santo Stefano — also called Campo Francesco Morosini for the Venetian doge whose statue stands in its center — is one of the largest squares in Venice and one of the most lived-in. Children play here, cafes spill their tables across the flagstones, and the church of Santo Stefano holds down one end with its Gothic brick. It feels less like a tourist destination than like a neighborhood square that happens to be in Venice.
Photographed in late September 2016 in black and white. The squares of Venice are where the city's daily life takes place; the monuments are for tourists, the campi are for everyone.
