Few castles have been ruined and rebuilt as completely as Eilean Donan. Held by the MacKenzies and the MacRaes for centuries, it was reduced to rubble by government warships in 1719 and lay open to the weather for two hundred years before Lieutenant-Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap began its painstaking reconstruction in 1911. Today's castle is, in a sense, a careful twentieth-century reading of a medieval stronghold — and somehow none the less powerful for it.
Made in late May 2023 on the road west to Skye. The castle is set in a landscape that flatters it from every angle: mountains behind, sea lochs on three sides, and a stone causeway that appears and disappears with the tide.
