A fenceline running across open Wiltshire grassland — the kind of composition that exists in the English countryside in numbers nobody could count. The fields around Salisbury have been worked since long before the Romans arrived; the property lines, the hedgerows, and the fences are layers of human decision laid across a landscape older than any of them.
Photographed in May 2023 during my first trip to England. The drive out to Stonehenge takes you through some of the gentlest countryside in southern Britain — chalk downs, wide fields, sky that goes on for miles. The henge is the destination, but the country around it is most of what stays with you.
