Stacked against the harbor wall in Portree, crab pots tell the working story of Skye that the postcards leave out. The pastel-painted houses around the harbor get most of the attention, but it's the boats and the gear piled along the quay that explain how the town has actually made its living for generations — out on the Sound of Raasay, hauling shellfish from the cold water. Photographed in late May 2023 in Portree, the small capital of Skye and the natural base for traveling the island. The light at the harbor changes constantly, the boats come and go with the tide, and the pots wait for the next morning's work.
