Brooklyn Bridge, Tower and Cables

The same Gothic tower, seen tighter and taller — the granite pier climbing the frame, one pointed arch at its shoulder, the steel cables fanning down past it in hard diagonals. The contrast of old stone and taut wire is the whole argument of the bridge.

Photographed May 2013. Strong side light splits the tower into bright stone and deep shadow while the cables cut across it. In black and white it reads as a study in two materials — the heavy and the fine, the masonry and the steel that hangs from it.
