Fog presses down over a gravel road cresting a ridge, a low pile of fieldstone stacked at the shoulder where the road bends out of sight. A skin of snow and slush covers the ground, tire tracks cutting dark lines through it, while bare trees fade one row at a time into the whiteout behind them. This kind of advection fog is common on high Appalachian gaps in winter, when a warm, moist air mass rides up over cold ground and settles into a cloud that never quite lifts.
There's a stillness to it that's almost total — no wind in the trees, no color beyond the muted grays and browns of wet stone and snow. It's less a landscape than the idea of one, most of it withheld by the fog and left to the imagination.
