Waterfall

A waterfall in the country near Lebanon, Tennessee, in the rolling limestone landscape east of Nashville. This is Middle Tennessee water at work — cutting through bedrock, dropping over a ledge into a clear pool below, the kind of small fall that the region's creeks produce wherever the rock steps down.

Photographed near Lebanon, Tennessee, in 2001, in black and white. Moving water suits monochrome — the long exposure smooths the fall into a soft white ribbon against the dark wet rock, and color would only get in the way.
