One of Venice's public water fountains — there are over a hundred of them across the city, all running cold, all drinkable, all carved or cast in some form of civic decoration. The fountains are part of a public water system that goes back centuries; Venice has no rivers, so the city has always had to import or collect its fresh water, and the public fountains were the principal source for most residents until the late nineteenth century.
Photographed in late September 2016 during my first trip to Italy. The small civic infrastructure of Venice — the fountains, the well-heads, the iron grates — is part of what gives the city its sense of being a place that has always been lived in, not just visited.
