Tribune Tower, In Fog

The same neo-Gothic landmark — the Tribune Tower, crowned by buttresses modeled on a French cathedral — but caught when the weather came in off the lake. Chicago's fog can erase the tops of its towers entirely, turning the skyline into something half-present.

Photographed in fog, June 2024. The mist does what no lens can: it removes everything behind the building and lets the Gothic crown emerge alone out of the grey. The tower stops being part of a skyline and becomes a single apparition. Black and white is the only honest way to render a day with no color left in it.
