A row of bare, silvery snags and tall bleached palm trunks stands against the living, green maritime forest just behind it — the boundary between what the erosion has already taken and what it hasn't reached yet. The contrast between the dead trees on the beach and the still-thriving forest a few yards inland is what makes Capers Island's shoreline so visually strange.
