Founded by William the Conqueror in 1066 and continually expanded for the next six centuries, the Tower of London has served as fortress, royal residence, treasury, mint, menagerie, and prison. It holds the Crown Jewels, and its walls have seen the execution of three English queens. The White Tower at its heart is one of the oldest buildings still in use anywhere in Britain. Photographed in May 2023 during my first visit to England. The Tower is the kind of place where the history is so dense that no single photograph can carry all of it; this is one moment of a thousand years.
