The river at the close of the day is the version of London that the postcards rarely show. The water turns the color of the sky above it; the bridges become silhouettes; the lit windows of the offices and apartments lining the banks start to come on one by one. The Thames is a working river, but in the half-hour between sunset and full dark it briefly becomes something else.
Photographed in May 2023 from the South Bank. The dusk light along the Thames is one of the things I came home from London still thinking about.
