Sunrise Through Cathedral and Campanile

Sunrise between the Duomo and Giotto's Campanile — a composition that depends on being in the right narrow street at the right moment of light. Florence in October has its mornings start cool and clear, the haze burning off the Arno valley as the sun climbs above the eastern hills.

Photographed in October 2016 in black and white during my first trip to Italy. The pull of Italy was the way culture, history, architecture, art, and food sit together in the same place; Florence is the most concentrated expression of all five.
