Lake Como holds light in a particular way at sunrise — the surrounding Alps trap the early sun above the water, so the lake brightens before the villages along its shore do. The first half-hour of the day belongs to the water itself: silver, almost still, and quieter than at any other moment.
Photographed in late September 2016 during my first trip to Italy — a country I had wanted to visit for years for the way it combines history, architecture, art, and food into a single texture of daily life. Lake Como was the first stop, and the right one for the slow start to a long journey.
