A view of the basilica from the colonnade — the curving twin arcades by Bernini that frame the approach to the church and form the great open arms of St. Peter's Square. The colonnade contains 284 columns and 88 pilasters, topped by 140 statues of saints, and was designed in 1656 to represent the Church embracing the world.

Photographed in October 2016 in black and white during my first trip to Italy. The colonnade is one of the great urban gestures in European history; the photograph can only show a piece of it.
