Skyline Arch sits high in a sandstone fin, its opening showing sky straight through. It is famous for changing overnight: in 1940 a huge block fell out of it, doubling the size of the hole in a single rockfall — a reminder that these forms are still being made.
Photographed June 2003. A big juniper and a dramatic weathered log dominate the foreground, with long shadows raking the wash and canyon walls rising at right. The arch is small in the frame; the late light and the foreground carry the picture.
