The church of Santa Maria della Visitazione sits along the Zattere on the southern edge of the Dorsoduro, looking across the Giudecca Canal. Built in the early sixteenth century with a clean Renaissance facade — simple white stone, classical pilasters, a quiet dignity — it was for centuries part of a complex that included a school and a hospital. The interior holds a ceiling painting that was for a long time attributed to Titian.
Made in late September 2016 during my first trip to Italy. The Zattere is one of the few long, sun-flooded promenades in Venice; the buildings along it are some of the city's most photographable, and Santa Maria della Visitazione is among the quieter pleasures of the walk.
