Ross Fountain / Edinburgh Castle

The Ross Fountain stands in West Princes Street Gardens, directly below the castle rock — a cast-iron Victorian extravagance of mermaids, cherubs, and allegorical figures, made in France for the 1862 International Exhibition in London and bought afterward for Edinburgh. Painted in its original colors after a 2018 restoration, it makes one of the city's signature compositions: ornate ironwork in the foreground, the medieval castle rising on its crag behind.
