The Rio di Malcanton runs through the western part of Venice, in the Santa Croce district — a working canal in a neighborhood largely untouched by tourism. The water is darker here than along the Grand Canal, the buildings less restored, the laundry more visible across the upper windows. This is the Venice that exists when the tour groups are not looking. Made in late September 2016 during my first time in Italy. The pull of Italy, for me, was the way history, architecture, art, food, and ordinary life share the same square foot of city; Venice is the most concentrated expression of that.
