Porta Torre is one of three surviving medieval gates in the city walls of Como — a stone tower nearly forty meters high, built in 1192 as part of the defenses raised after Frederick Barbarossa's destruction of the original Roman walls. The tower has stood at the southern edge of the old city for more than eight centuries, watching over the road that runs down from the Alps toward Milan. Photographed in late September 2016 in black and white during my first trip to Italy. Como is more often visited for its lake than for its city, but the historic center is itself worth a slow walk — Roman foundations, medieval walls, Renaissance churches, and the cathedral all packed into a few square blocks. Porta Torre is one of the bones of that old city, still standing where it was built.
