The Piazzetta is the smaller annex to Piazza San Marco — the short L-shaped extension that opens onto the lagoon between the Doge's Palace and the Marciana Library. Two granite columns rise from its waterfront, brought back from the Levant in the twelfth century, topped with statues of the city's two patron saints. The Piazzetta was historically the formal water-gate of the Republic, where ambassadors arrived and where executions were carried out.
Made in late September 2016 in black and white. The Piazzetta is one of the most concentrated pieces of civic ceremony in Europe; the camera, here, is recording a stage as much as a place.
