The Piazzetta opens onto the lagoon between two of the great civic buildings of Venice — the Doge's Palace on one side, Sansovino's Library on the other — and frames the view across the water toward San Giorgio Maggiore. It is one of the great spatial compositions in European urbanism: a public space defined by the two most important pieces of architecture in the city, with a view across the lagoon as the closing wall.
