Piazza San Pietro

St. Peter's Square is the great gathering space of the Catholic Church — 320 meters long, capable of holding several hundred thousand people, anchored by an Egyptian obelisk in its center that Caligula brought to Rome in 37 AD. The obelisk was moved to its current position by Pope Sixtus V in 1586, a feat of engineering that required 800 men, 140 horses, and 47 cranes.

Made in October 2016 in black and white during my first time in Rome. The piazza is one of the most photographed spaces in the world; the trick, here as elsewhere in Rome, is to find a quiet moment and let the architecture speak for itself.
