A vast, empty tidal flat stretches toward a dark line of maritime forest under a heavy bank of cloud — Capers Island at low tide, accessible only by boat and largely undeveloped. The island is a state Heritage Preserve, and its total lack of infrastructure is precisely the point: no docks, no buildings, nothing but sand, marsh, and forest. Photographed on a day trip out to Capers Island by boat from Isle of Palms, the tide low enough to expose a huge stretch of open sand.
