Tucked into a wooded glen near Invermoriston, the old bridge crosses the Morriston where it tumbles down toward Loch Ness. Built by Thomas Telford in the early nineteenth century and now bypassed by a newer crossing, it stands as it has for two hundred years — stone arches mossed with time, the water beneath them moving with the same urgency it always has.
I came upon this bridge in late May 2023 on the long drive between Inverness and Skye. It is the kind of place that rewards stopping — a small footpath, a sudden rush of water, the sense of having found something the road would have carried you past.
