The column was completed in 1843 — thirty-eight years after the Battle of Trafalgar — and rises 169 feet above the square. Horatio Nelson stands at its top in Craigleith sandstone, his stone gaze fixed toward the Admiralty he served. The four bronze relief panels at the column's base depict his four major battles; the four lions guarding it were added in 1867, sculpted by Sir Edwin Landseer.
