St. Andrew's rises in red sandstone on the west bank of the Ness, its twin towers among the first landmarks a traveler sees on entering the city. Consecrated in 1869, it was the first new Anglican cathedral built in Britain since the Reformation — a place of quiet ambition in a town more often remembered for the wilder country beyond it.
Rendered here in black and white to honor the weight and texture of the stone, this image was made on a clear morning in late spring 2023, when the light along the river was at its softest. The cathedral has stood watch over the Ness for more than a hundred and fifty years; the photograph is one small moment of that long vigil.
