The inner courtyard of the Doge's Palace is one of the most ornate spaces in Venice — Gothic on three sides, Renaissance on the fourth, the whole composition organized around the Giants' Staircase where new doges were crowned. The space holds nearly a thousand years of Venetian self-presentation in stone, and it remains one of the most photographable interiors in the city, even though it is open to the sky.
Photographed in late September 2016 in black and white during my first trip to Italy. The Doge's Palace is the architectural argument that Venice made about itself for a thousand years; the courtyard is where that argument is most fully made.
