Bellagio at street level is a town of narrow lanes climbing up from the lake — flagstones polished by two centuries of visitors, painted facades in the warm Italian palette of ochre and rose, geraniums in pots on every iron balcony. The shoreline gets all the postcards; the town behind it rewards the walker who looks down side streets.
Photographed in late September 2016 during my first time in Italy. The pull of Italy was its layered texture — culture, history, architecture, art, and food woven into the same square mile — and Bellagio is one of the places where all five are visible at once.
