A row of gondolas at rest along a quayside — the city's working fleet between fares. Each gondola is hand-built to specific Venetian specifications: roughly eleven meters long, asymmetric to compensate for the gondolier's single oar, painted black by an old sumptuary law that prevented the nobility from competing with each other through decoration. The form has been essentially unchanged for several hundred years.
Photographed in late September 2016 in black and white during my first time in Venice. The shapes of the gondolas are essentially graphic; monochrome lets them do their work.
