Flatiron and Clock

The Flatiron Building, finished in 1902, was one of the first steel-framed skyscrapers in the city and remains its most photographed — a triangular tower squeezed onto the wedge where Broadway crosses Fifth Avenue. Out front stands the Fifth Avenue Building Clock, a cast-iron sidewalk clock planted at the curb in 1909, one of the last of its kind still keeping time in Manhattan.

Photographed May 2013. The old clock and the old tower share the frame, two survivors of the same decade. In black and white the wedge narrows to its famous knife-edge and the clock keeps its patient watch at the bottom of the picture.
