Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle sits on Castle Rock, a plug of basalt left by an extinct volcano, rising sheer above the city on three sides. There has been a royal fortress here since at least the twelfth century, and a settlement on the rock for far longer — it is one of the most besieged places in Britain, attacked dozens of times across its history. It still holds the Honours of Scotland, the oldest crown jewels in the British Isles, and the Stone of Destiny.

Photographed in May 2023 during a trip through Scotland. The castle is the fixed point the whole city is arranged around — visible from nearly everywhere in the center, the thing every street eventually turns to face. No view of Edinburgh is really complete without it.
