Dock in Morning Fog

A dock running out into morning fog on Lake Hamilton, the far end fading into white where the mist still sits on the water. Lake Hamilton, in the Ouachita Mountains near Hot Springs, often starts its mornings socked in; the fog burns off as the sun climbs, but for an hour or so the dock simply leads out into nothing.

Photographed at Lake Hamilton in 2009. A dock disappearing into fog is one of those compositions that does most of the work itself — a familiar structure leading the eye out into the unknown, the soft edge where the dock stops and the fog begins.
