Where the rock erodes evenly on all sides it rounds into great drum- and barrel-shaped masses, sitting on broader stone bases like objects set on a table. The desert around Arches is full of them, each one a single block slowly losing its corners.
Photographed June 2003. This one fills the frame against an open horizon of distant mesas, the side light modeling its bulk. Almost anvil-shaped — heavy, solid, and strangely deliberate-looking for something made only by weather.
