The Duomo di Como is one of the last great Gothic cathedrals to be built in Italy — begun in 1396 and not fully finished until 1740, the work spanning three and a half centuries and several architectural styles. The facade is pure Gothic; the dome, by Filippo Juvarra, is fully Baroque. The interior holds works by Bernardino Luini and Gaudenzio Ferrari, and tapestries woven for the cathedral in the sixteenth century.
Made in late September 2016 during my first time in Italy, rendered in black and white to bring out the carved stone of the facade. The cathedral is a study in how Italian architecture absorbs centuries of taste without losing coherence.
