In black and white, the bronze figure of James Oglethorpe stands atop his pedestal in Chippewa Square, framed by bare, wide-reaching oak limbs and a herringbone brick plaza below. Oglethorpe founded the Georgia colony in 1733 and laid out Savannah's original grid of squares — this one, dedicated in his honor in 1910, sits near the spot commonly associated with his first landing.
Photographed on an overcast morning early in the Savannah stretch of the trip, when the flat gray sky made the square's ironwork and brickwork feel more graphic than they would have in full sun.
