Chicago Skyline, From the Lake

The classic view of Chicago is the one from the water. The whole downtown stands in a single wall along the lakefront — there is no other American skyline you can take in this completely from one vantage — and from out on Lake Michigan the city reads as one continuous front of towers rising straight from the shore.

Photographed at dusk, June 2024, from a boat on the lake. This is the skyline at its most iconic: seen whole, from the water, as the light goes. In black and white the dusk becomes a graded sky behind the silhouette — the city as a single dark profile against the last of the day.
