The Chicago River is one of the few rivers in the world deliberately made to run backwards. In 1900 engineers reversed its flow to carry the city's sewage away from Lake Michigan, the source of its drinking water — a feat of civil engineering large enough that it reshaped the region's whole relationship to its water. Today the river is the spine of downtown, threaded by movable bridges and walled on both banks by towers that put their best faces toward it.

Photographed at night, June 2024. After dark the river stops being infrastructure and becomes a black mirror — the buildings lit, the water doubling them, the bridges holding the frame together. It is the view that makes the densest part of the city legible all at once.
