Cemetery

Lower Manhattan keeps its colonial dead in plain sight — the churchyards of Trinity and St. Paul's, where leaning slate headstones sit in green plots walled off by cast-iron fences while the financial district roars around them. They are among the oldest things left on the island.

Photographed May 2013, shot through the fence. The ornate iron bars hold the foreground in sharp focus while the old stones and trees soften behind them. The fence is the point — the city looking in at its own past through the railings, kept out and drawn in at once.
