The bell tower of St. Mark's stands 323 feet above the piazza — the tallest structure in Venice and the building from which the entire city's relationship to the lagoon is most legible. The current tower is a 1912 reconstruction of the original ninth-century campanile, which collapsed in 1902 without injuring anyone except the caretaker's cat. The replacement was built "as it was, where it was" — identical in form to the medieval tower it replaced.
Made in late September 2016 in black and white during my first time in Italy. The Campanile is one of the great viewpoints of the Mediterranean; on a clear day, you can see across the lagoon to the Alps.
