Bristol has been a port city for nearly a thousand years — the second-largest in medieval England, the launching point of John Cabot's 1497 voyage to North America, and for centuries one of the main hubs of British transatlantic trade, both its prosperity and its complicity. The city today carries all of that history visibly: Georgian terraces on Clifton's heights, Victorian engineering across the gorge, working dockyards reinvented as harborside, and one of the most distinctive urban skylines in the west of England. Photographed in May 2023 as part of my first journey to the United Kingdom. Bristol was a deliberate side trip from the main route through London and Scotland — a city that earns its own day for anyone interested in how an English port reinvents itself across the centuries.
