Bristol's Floating Harbour is one of the great pieces of civic engineering in nineteenth-century England — a non-tidal harbor created in 1809 by damming a stretch of the River Avon, allowing ships to remain afloat through the city's enormous tidal range. The harbor has been continuously rebuilt around its working past; old quaysides now hold restaurants and museums, but the water and the warehouses are essentially unchanged from the city's maritime peak.
Made in May 2023 during my first visit to the United Kingdom. The harbor at dusk holds light in a particular way — the water reflects the sky, the buildings hold the last of the warmth, and the entire scene quiets down for the night.
