A massive rusted gear meshes with its pinion in the corroded machinery of an old swing bridge, every rivet and tooth caked in red rust. Below and beyond, the calm river glows with reflected blue and gold light through a gap in the ironwork. Photographed in Monroe, Louisiana, in 1995, the image finds intricate beauty in the weathered mechanism that once turned the bridge.
