A slender obelisk rises through a gap in the oak canopy, moss hanging in loose curtains on either side. Obelisks like this one are among the most common monument forms at Bonaventure, a Victorian taste for Egyptian Revival imagery that shows up in cemeteries across the country from roughly the 1850s through the 1910s. Photographed looking almost straight up, the overcast sky reading nearly white behind the stone.
