A narrow dirt path curves away through a stand of tall, straight trunks, hemmed in on both sides by ferns and low undergrowth catching dapples of light from the canopy above. This stretch is part of the Appalachian Trail, the roughly 2,190-mile footpath that runs the length of the Appalachian range from Georgia to Maine — Georgia's own section threads through country very much like this.
Shot in black and white, the light falls in soft, uneven patches across the path and the ferns, giving the whole scene a quiet, dappled rhythm. It's a trail photograph in the truest sense: the path itself is the subject, leading the eye forward into trees that keep going past the frame.
