The William Washington Gordon Monument rises on its Corinthian columns at the center of Wright Square, agapanthus blooming purple at its base and a historical marker standing sentry nearby. Gordon founded the Central of Georgia Railroad, and the square itself has an older, more complicated history — it was originally the burial site of Tomochichi, the Yamacraw chief who helped Oglethorpe establish the colony, before his monument was moved to make room. Taken on an overcast Savannah morning while working through the downtown squares on foot, marker signs and all.
